There is nothing like late Fall fishing in Destin, Florida for redfish. During this time a year, schools of big "bull" reds congregate together on the crystal clear beaches and white sand. These fish are a blast to catch on light tackle and its not uncommon to see schools of 50+ fish roaming the beach together. During this trip we will hop aboard my 23' Pathfinder bay boat and ride down the beach in search for these schools of redfish. In a typical trip I use a mix of different artificial lures to catch the fish - which is usually the most thrilling when you feel the big reds hit the lure - but if the fish aren't hitting artificials I will have some live bait on standby. If you are a fly fisherman and want to give it a try on the fly - I have the rods and reels rigged up ready to chase these bruisers on the fly.
A typical day would start around 9:30am just as the sun is getting high enough to spot the fish on the beach. We'll spend the first hour or two locating the school of fish if they prove to be difficult to find. The rest of the time will be spent slowly motoring around with the trolling motor picking off redfish as quick as they'll bite. I've had days where we've left them biting after pulling 5-6 fish off the school. This trip is best taken the weekend before Thanksgiving all the way through Christmas.
